Difference Between TFT and IPS LCD Screen in Mobile

Aug 31, 2023|

Introduction:

Innolux is a professional TFT-LCD manufacturer under Foxconn Group, specializing in top-quality LCD screens for mobile devices. Today, we'll discuss the key differences between two popular types used in mobile phones: TFT and IPS.
As mobile phones and computers are updated day by day, the screen materials of these electronic products are attracting more and more attention, and people's requirements for picture clarity and layering are becoming more and more demanding. This requires as many colors as possible to be displayed on the screen - more colors means more complex images can be combined. There are two main types of screen materials on the market: TFT and IPS. Today I will give you a detailed introduction to the differences between TFT and IPS screen materials.

TFT Screen in Mobile

1. TFT LCD Screen:

TFT (Thin-Film Transistor) is a widely used display technology in mobile devices. It offers fast pixel response times, vibrant colors, and high brightness levels. However, TFT screens have limited viewing angles and lower overall image quality compared to IPS.
2. IPS Screen:

IPS (In-Plane Switching) is an LCD technology known for its superior image quality and wider viewing angles. This type of screen provides accurate color reproduction, better contrast ratios, and improved visibility outdoors. IPS screens are more expensive than TFT screens, but they offer a better visual experience.
3. Key Differences:

a) Viewing Angles: TFT screens have narrower viewing angles, resulting in color and contrast shifts when viewed from different angles. IPS screens, on the other hand, maintain consistent image quality from almost any viewing angle.
b) Color Accuracy: IPS screens offer more accurate and vibrant colors compared to TFT screens. This makes IPS the preferred choice for professionals working with color-critical applications such as photo editing or graphic design.
c) Response Time: TFT screens have faster pixel response times, minimizing motion blur in fast-paced scenes. IPS screens have slightly slower response times, which may result in a slight motion blur but offer better overall image quality.
The difference between screen material TFT and IPS display effect
The IPS screen has good four viewing angles, and the viewing angle is generally around 178°.
TFT screen, the legendary "three missing one" screen, that is, the effect in three directions is good, but the effect in one direction is not good.
Compared with TFT, the advantages of IPS are clear at a glance. IPS screens are the ideal screens for mobile phones and tablets, which is why Apple chose IPS, but the purchase price of IPS is higher than that of TFT, so some manufacturers have to reduce the cost of hardware and choose TFT screens. But if you have a sufficient budget, it is recommended to give priority to IPS screens.
4. Characteristics of screen materials TFT and IPS

TFT is characterized by good brightness, high degree of restoration, splicing, fast response, high contrast, high visibility, low granularity, good color, and good performance in black and white.
The biggest feature of the IPS panel is that its two poles are on the same surface, unlike other liquid crystal modes where the electrodes are arranged three-dimensionally on the upper and lower surfaces. This technology optimizes the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules and adopts a horizontal arrangement. When encountering external pressure, the molecular structure sinks slightly downwards, but the overall molecules are still horizontal. This technology is also called hard screen technology. When encountering external force, the firmness and stability of the liquid crystal molecular structure of the hard screen is far superior to that of the soft screen! Therefore, it will not cause picture distortion and affect the color of the picture and can protect the picture effect from being damaged to the greatest extent.
