LCD and LCM The Differences Between LCD Displays and LCD Modules

Jul 12, 2023|

Despite the fact that LCD screens and LCD modules are often utilized, most people outside of the business are not familiar with their differences. This article attempts to explain the distinctions between displays and modules within the framework of the electronics industry in the hopes of assisting readers.

A specific type of liquid crystal display panel is known by the abbreviation LCD or liquid crystal display.

LCM stands for Liquid-Crystal Module, which refers to a module incorporating a liquid crystal display, connectors, control, and driver circuits, PCB (Printed Circuit Board), backlight source, structural components, and other assembled elements.

Differences between LCD screens and LCD Modules

LCDs are components of modules. A liquid crystal module refers to a component that assembles a liquid crystal screen, connectors, control and driver circuits, PCB, backlight source, and structural components.

Typically, LCD modules refer to small-sized displays, while large-sized displays with control functions are not usually referred to as LCD modules but rather as monitors or LCDs.

Differences between LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and LCM (Liquid-Crystal Module)

◆Types of Modules

It can be categorized based on the manufacturing process, primarily as Chip On Board (COB) LCD modules and Chip On Glass (COG) LCD modules.

Another important classification is based on the display content and method, which includes character modules, graphic dot-matrix modules, and segment modules.

◆Types of Displays

1. The common types include OLED displays, STN displays, TFT displays, and TFD displays.

2. From a conceptual perspective, LCD refers to the liquid crystal display, while LCM refers to the liquid-crystal module.

3. From an industry perspective, LCD is a general term used in the LCD industry, whereas LCM cannot be used as a substitute for LCD.

4. From a product perspective, LCD represents the front-end product or process, while LCM represents the back-end product or process. LCD specifically refers to the LCD panel (Cell) portion, while LCM is a combination of the following modules: LCD panel, ACF (Anisotropic Conductive Film), driver IC, PCB, FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit), B/L (Backlight) module, and metal frame.

5. From a production perspective, for small and medium-sized LCDs, LCD manufacturers mainly produce panels, while LCM manufacturers purchase panels from the former and combine them with other modules to form the modules. One LCD panel can supply multiple LCMs, and LCM manufacturers can also purchase LCD panels from several LCD manufacturers. For large-sized LCDs, LCD manufacturers usually produce the modules themselves and sell them to TV manufacturers, who can directly use the modules to make televisions.
