Introduction and Recommendations for Computer Monitors

I. Common Display Panel Types

Choosing a monitor depends largely on the type of display panel it uses.

Many people are aware that mainstream monitor panels are based on three types of LCD technology: TN, VA, and IPS. People often say that TN panels have fast response times and are suitable for gaming, VA panels are used for curved screens, and IPS panels have good color accuracy. However, this is just a basic understanding. Below, I will explain the selection and characteristics of each of these panels in detail.

Computer Monitors

●TN Panel: TN panels were the earliest to appear, making them widely used in the early stages with lower costs. The drawbacks of TN panels are evident: limited viewing angles, poor color representation, and overall color distortion. The standout feature of TN panels is their extremely fast response time, which some manufacturers have pushed down to 0.5ms. When combined with high refresh rates, this makes TN panels the preferred choice for FPS gaming monitors, suitable for hardcore FPS gamers.

●VA Panel: VA panels are often used for curved displays, with Samsung being a notable manufacturer. VA panels offer high contrast ratios (typically around 3000:1), excellent HDR effects, and good color representation. However, they can suffer from significant motion blur, impacting the viewing experience. VA panels are well-suited for users who require high-quality visuals for movies, videos, and text-based tasks.

●IPS Panel: IPS panels provide a wide 178° viewing angle, good color accuracy, and representation, as well as moderate response times and contrast ratios. IPS panels are well-balanced and versatile. In summary:

Color Accuracy: IPS > VA > TN

Response Time: TN > IPS > VA

Contrast Ratio: VA > IPS > TN

Viewing Angle: IPS > VA > TN Conclusion: Unless you have specific requirements (e.g., high response time for gaming), it is generally recommended to purchase monitors with IPS panels.

The price and quality of IPS monitors vary, and there are many manufacturers producing IPS panels.

II. Resolution Selection of display panel

Common 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor Resolutions:

HD (1280x720)

1080P (Full HD, 1920x1080)

2K (QHD, 2560x1440)

4K (Ultra HD, 3840x2160)

Resolution Selection

●Recommendations:

Choose 1080P resolution for screens below 23.8 inches.

Opt for 2K or higher resolutions for screens between 25 and 32 inches.

Choose 4K resolution for screens larger than 32 inches.

Common 21:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor Resolutions:

1080P (2560x1080)

2K (3440x1440)

4K (5120x2160)

Note: Some manufacturers label 2560x1080 as "2K" and 3440x1440 as "4K," but due to the elongated aspect ratio of 21:9 monitors, the PPI (pixels per inch) may not match the true 16:9 resolution equivalences.

III. Color Gamut and Color Depth

Color Gamut and Color Depth

Color Gamut refers to the range of colors a monitor can display relative to standard color spaces, often expressed as a percentage.

Common color gamuts include sRGB, Adobe RGB, DCI-P3, and NTSC.

Color Depth

Recommendations:

Choose monitors with at least 95% sRGB coverage, 90% DCI-P3 coverage, and 90% NTSC coverage.

Color Depth refers to the transition of colors from black to white in various shades of gray.

Choose monitors with native color depth for better color accuracy.

IV. Refresh Rate

Common refresh rates include 60Hz, 75Hz, and 144Hz.

Recommendations:

60Hz: Suitable for everyday office work, videos, and non-demanding gaming.

75Hz-120Hz: Offers smoother performance for most games, particularly FPS games.

144Hz: Offers top-tier refresh rates, generally using TN panels but potentially compromising color accuracy and viewing angles.

Note: While higher refresh rates provide smoother experiences, they often come at the cost of visual quality. For most users, 60Hz or 75Hz is sufficient, while heavy gamers may benefit from 120Hz or 144Hz.

In conclusion, when selecting a computer monitor, it's important to consider the type of of display panel, resolution, color gamut, color depth, and refresh rate that best suits your needs and preferences.
